On February 24, 2022, the Alabama State House passed House Bill 272, the state’s Constitutional Carry bill on a 65-37 vote.
This is the first time the Alabama State House passed Constitutional Carry. It is now heading to the Alabama State Senate, which has passed similar legislation in the past.
State Representative Shane Stringer is chief sponsor of the bill. State Representative Andrew Sorrelll, like pro-Second Amendment champions such as Jonathan Stickland in Texas, traditionally championed the bill for the past several years.
Constitutional Carry is the simple concept that any lawful individual should be allowed to carry a firearm without having to be the government for permission. In Alabama’s case, any lawful individual 21 and up will be allowed to carry a firearm without a permit if Constitutional Carry is passed.
It’s one of the key steps towards restoring the right to bear arms in America.
Alabama is ranked in 18th place for best states for gun owners in Guns & Ammo magazine. Passing Constitutional Carry will undoubtedly boost its pro-Second Amendment profile.
The passage of Constitutional Carry is very much a partisan marker these days. It’s mostly red states that are passing these laws, which is a sign of polarization. Gun owners must take advantage of this partisan dynamic and ensure that every red state passes Constitutional Carry by 2030. Let’s make the most out of the changing dynamics taking place in American politics.
