According to a WJHL report, Griffey offered his thoughts on Kyle Rittenhouse’s prosecution, declaring, “I think we all saw what happened. He was attacked. He was defending himself and the jury found that. And despite that – he was still prosecuted for a murder charge. This law is intended to sort of protect that from happening in the future.”
Griffey added, “I think it’s a reasonable response to make sure citizens are protected from malicious prosecutions or being prosecuted when there’s not really enough evidence in the case to pursue a criminal charge against them. They have to go through hiring a lawyer, hiring experts, lost wages – all costs to them. That’s not a fair system.”
AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News reported that Griffey’s bill would require the state of Tennessee “to reimburse legal fees and court costs for individuals prosecuted for murder and acquitted on self-defense.”
Griffey’s legislation is not the first kind of bill that protects lawful individuals from malicious prosecution. Hawkins pointed back to the end of last November when Oklahoma State Senator Nathan Dahm filed Senate Bill 1120 that is designed to protect individuals who have been subjected to bogus legal action.
Under SB 1120, if a person with a murder charge is found not guilty because of a justifiable homicide, the state would have to compensate that person for all relevant costs “including loss of wages, legal fees incurred, and other expenses involved in their defense.”
Such legislative efforts should be lauded. Let’s face it, the Left isn’t getting any gun control passed at the federal level. So, they’re going to use Big Tech to censor and deplatform gun organizations and gun manufacturers, sue gun manufacturers, and sue people who use their firearms in self-defense.
One cannot help but admire the Left for its tenacity. These forces of evil never rest and find every way to harass the law-abiding. As a result, pro-Second Amendment forces must be willing to respond just as vigorously and check them at every point they try to assault our freedoms.
The Right cannot get complacent in these times of growing political tensions.
