San Francisco is one of the most anti-gun cities in the US. More importantly, it’s situated in an even more anti-gun state in California.
At times, however, state legislatures can drag their feet. The Left, ever relentless, takes matters into its own hands and pushes for its own radical measures at the local level. San Francisco is doing so by pursuing a ban on the possession of so-called “ghost guns.”
On September 7, 2021, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation that would ban the sale or possession of ghost guns in San Francisco. Ghost guns perturb elected officials because they can be assembled at home and don’t have a serial number that makes them relatively untraceable.
As of now, the California law requires an individual buying a ghost gun to file an application for a serial number with the California Department of Justice and add the digits to the firearm after assembly. The new local legislation being proposed in San Francisco will make the sale or possession of a ghost gun in the city a misdemeanor, of which offenders could be fined up to $1,000 and receive jail time,
The fact of the matter is that San Francisco’s crime problems, like many other leftist cities’ problems, are the product of soft policing combined with laws that disarm lawful individuals. San Francisco stands out for its negligent crime policies such as the decriminalization of shoplifting, which has emboldened criminals and contributed to the city’s social decline. “Ghost guns” are really just homemade firearms that Americans have assembled since time immemorial.
There’s nothing special about them, and attempting to ban them is a fool’s errand. In fact, by depriving law-abiding individuals of the ability to access homemade firearms, criminals gain a significant advantage. It’s well established that criminals use black markets to acquire firearms and will do whatever it takes to acquire firearms to carry out their crimes. On the other hand, lawful individuals comply with laws, no matter how wrong-headed the laws can be, and end up disarmed.
Don’t expect San Francisco elected officials to ever get this.
