An Iowa school board has finally gotten that memo.
On August 22, 2022, Iowa’s Spirit Lake Community School Board unanimously approved a measure to have armed staff for the purposes of self-defense.
Per a report by WHO13, the board superintendent, David Smith, can choose up to 10 staff member volunteers and have them armed on the school premises. The aim of this measure is to defend students during active shooter situations.
AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News pointed out that “Iowa law makes clear there is no school/firearm violation for individuals armed at school if those individuals have been authorized by the school authorities.”
Iowa has been on a pro-gun path in the last few years as seen with its decision to pass Constitutional Carry. in 2021. In the wake of the Uvalde massacre, many school districts in red counties are beginning to take security matters into their own hands and allow for armed staff and security to assume defense roles.
The fact of the matter is that “gun-free” zone signs don’t stop criminals. As a matter of fact, these kinds of signs are invitations for criminals to prey upon the innocent at schools.
Truth be told, lawful, armed individuals are still the most reliable first responders against blood-thirsty criminals. The good news is that more local governments are coming to grips with this truth and are acting in a proactive manner to protect their youth.
