Gun Control Bill Surprisingly Dies in California

At times, the forces of freedom catch breaks in politics. Even in reliably blue states, the same control freaks who want to destroy individual freedoms occasionally see their dastardly plots stopped in the tracks.

A recent case in California is particularly curious. On September 1, 2022, the California state legislature effectively killed Senate Bill 918 by a count of two votes. As Sarah Weaver of the Daily Caller observed, this bill would have “limited citizens’ ability to carry weapons in courts, hospitals, airports, on public transportation, and in other areas deemed ‘sensitive.’”

Back in June, the Supreme Court ruled in the landmark New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen case that struck down New York’s law mandating a demonstration of a need for self-defense in order to carry a firearm. In California’s case, this ruling overturned California’s “good cause” requirement. Despite this ruling, Gun Control Inc. California anti-gun lobbyists scrambled to cobble together legislation that would grant the state the power to ban concealed carry in “sensitive” areas.

The bill was initially scuttled on August 30, California’s bill failed on August 30 in the State Assembly. This bill was brought back again for a vote on September 1 via the process of  “reconsideration.” In the end, SB 918 failed in the Assembly, just two votes short of the 2/3 supermajority required for legislation to be passed.

Democratic State Senator Anthony Portantino tacked on an urgency clause to SB 918 that would make it go into effect immediately once it was passed. Portantino was caught by surprise upon watching this bill getting capsized.
“I’m legitimately surprised it didn’t pass,” Portantino declared.

Portantino promised to reintroduce a similar bill in December for the upcoming 2023-24 legislative session.

“Thank you to each and every one of you that took the time to contact your legislators about SB 918,” the no compromise Second Amendment organization Gun Owners of California declared in a statement that it released on September 1.

“With California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta physically on the Floor of the Assembly twisting arms for a vote to make the entire state a CCW prohibited area, SB 918 still failed to secure the votes necessary for passage. THIS IS INCREDIBLE NEWS,” GOA added in the statement.

California is one of the most anti-gun states in the nation. However, gun control is not always a shoe-in as far as passage goes. In the present, this could be the result of the 2020 Summer of Love when the permanent bureaucracy and its allies in the NGO space, state governments, local governments, and the corporate press promoted mass rioting and crime nationwide.

Consequently, many people lost faith in the government’s ability to provide public order and started to turn towards the most reliable means of self-defense — the Second Amendment. Record-breaking firearms sales are testament to that.

As long as gun culture exists in America, the Second Amendment will not be going away so easily.
