Constitutional Carry Lands on Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s Desk

2022 appears to be another strong year for Constitutional Carry.

Ohio, a state that has long been stubborn towards the passage of Constitutional Carry, now appears to be on the verge of seeing this bill become law.

The Ohio House Government Oversight Committee passed Senate Bill 215 on March 1, 2022 which established Constitutional Carry in the Buckeye State. Constitutional Carry is the simple concept that lawful individuals should be allowed to carry a firearm concealed or openly without a permit. In addition, SB 215 scraps mandatory training for gun owners.

The bill was then passed on the House floor, 57-35, and in the Ohio Senate, 24-8, on March 2. Now, all that it needs is Governor Mike DeWine’s signature.

The bill’s main sponsor is State Senator Terry Johnson. In a recent statement, he declared “Ohioans are already permitted to open carry firearms, however, once an individual were to put on a sweatshirt or jacket, they would be in violation of the law….Senate Bill 215 solves this problem and further removes restrictions to Ohio’s second amendment rights.”

With Alabama recently passing Constitutional carry, there are now 22 Constitutional Carry states. AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News listed off some of those states:

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. restart
Constitutional Carry is the Right’s bread and butter legislative battle. It’s the fight that’s yielded the most results in recent decades and will continue to do so for the time being.

If the Right is fully dialed in, it can make every red state in the nation a Constitutional Carry. But we must always remember that the battle to restore gun rights is far from over. There’s a litany of gun control on the books at the federal level that needs to get scrapped.

Due to the polarized nature of American politics, most of this gun control reform will have to take place at the state level. In other words, the next battles will be those involving the nullification of unconstitutional federal gun control laws.

In the meantime, let’s celebrate our legislative victories but never lose sight of the bigger battles that lie in front of us.
