In the latter case, having the ability to bear arms is a useful tool when confronting criminals, who have been largely empowered lately because of soft-on-crime policies.
Cities like Chicago have been particularly plagued by this crime trend. Thankfully, for a 45-year-old individual equipped with a concealed carry license, he was able to exercise his right to bear arms against a criminal who wanted to steal his car.
Early in the morning of August 22, 2022 in the West Side section of Chicago, a carjacker shot at the 45-year-old man while he was inside of his car. The man shot back at the carjacker and struck him in the chest. The carjacker was subsequently taken to the Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition, according to police reports. Law enforcement was able to recover his firearm at the scene of the crime.
The concealed carry license holder came out unscathed during this incident. Defensive gun use cases are actually quite extensive in the US.
Criminologists Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz have studied the issue and discovered that there are roughly 2.2 to 2.5 million cases of firearms used in self-defense on a yearly basis. Of the defensive gun use cases they reviewed, 1.5 to 1.9 million involved handguns.
The media obviously won’t cover these incidents. They prefer the “If it bleeds, it leads” approach to giving wall-to-wall coverage of mass shooting incidents that they can fearmonger about.
Nevertheless, gun owners should enthusiastically celebrate self-defensive gun use incidents. They’re examples of responsible gun ownership that make a strong case for the right to bear arms.
