One thing the Left has to be given credit for is its relentless drive to destroy individuals’ freedoms.
And they will do so even if it means that they run afoul of the law. Katy Grimes of the California Globe noted how California has practically ignored the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc, v. Bruen decision that effectively legalized shall issue carry nationwide.
California Democrats are ignoring the Supreme Court decision by moving forward Senate Bill 918. Democratic State Senator Anthony Portantino sponsored this legislation which appeared to be dead in the water in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. However, on August 11, 2022, the bill was moved out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee “with 32 pages of 185 new amendments,” according to Grimes.
“This strikes me as clearly unconstitutional under the First Amendment, even apart from the Second amendment,” UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh said about SB 918. “The government can’t restrict ordinary citizens’ actions—much less their constitutionally protected actions—based on the viewpoints that they express.”
“Senate Bill 918 seeks to remove the right to protect oneself and family by preventing law abiding citizens, regardless of their background, from being able to carry a firearm outside the home,” Rick Travis, Legislative Director of the California Rifle and Pistol Association said to the California Globe.
Tom Knighton of Bearing Arms noted that “The initial bill heavily restricted where people could carry, but it was a list that likely might have survived judicial scrutiny.”
Though, the gun grabbers in Sacramento are getting more creative in how they want to undermine Californians’ right to bear arms. Specifically, this legislation’s arbitrary carve outs of where people can carry firearms. This is one trick that many blue states will use in the wake of the Bruen decision.
On top of that, SB 918 features a “good moral character” requirement, which will, without a doubt, be arbitrarily defined by bureaucratic busybodies. Under the current woke environment, people who express right-wing views and attitudes will not only be “canceled” but also stripped of their right to bear arms should this bill become law in California.
It’s becoming clear that there’s a bifurcation in America, where red states are going in a pro-gun direction, and blue states are increasingly embracing civilian disarmament, pro-gun Supreme Court rulings be damned. At this juncture, people in blue states will have to rely on lawfare, rural nullification of state gun control, or move to more pro-gun states in Red America are the only ways out in this post-persuasion environment we live in.
21st century politics in America will simply never be the same.
