Whenever a madman goes on a shooting rampage in a gun-free zone, the mainstream media makes it impossible to ignore. Yet, like in the case of this would-be mass shooting in Chicago, it is outright ignored whenever an armed gun owner steps in to stop the would-be tragedy,
The incident occurred on July 4th in the Austin neighborhood of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago.
34-year old Calvin Gonnigan began his rampage at about 10:45 PM, fatally shooting 45-year-old Janina Ford in the head. He then fired at two other men, aged 32 and 49.
The 32-year old man was struck multiple times, but survived.
But when Gonnigan fired at the 49-year old man, striking him in the buttocks, he didn’t expect his target to be armed, considering the extreme gun control measures in place in Lightfoot’s Chicago. The 49-year old pulled out his legally concealed firearm, and engaged the would-be mass murderer, hitting him in the arm and hip.
After being shot, Gonnigan cried for help like the coward he is, and was later stabilized at the hospital.
Due to the heroic actions of the 49-year old man, Gonniagan’s shooting rampage was cut short, with the Ford being the only victim to pass from their injuries.
We would have loved to report on this story earlier, but it didn’t get coverage beyond local Chicago stations. Pro-Gun News only became aware of the shooting after reading about it in AmmoLand.
Local news station Fox 4 reported on the incident:
“A man allegedly fatally shot a woman and wounded two other men over the weekend in Austin before being shot by a concealed-carry holder, police said.
Calvin Gonnigan, 34, is charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, as well as one count of aggravated assault with a firearm in the July 4 incident, Chicago police said.
Gonnigan allegedly opened fire about 10:45 p.m. in the first block of North Menard Avenue, striking 45-year-old Janina Ford in the head, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two men, 32 and 49 years old, also suffered gunshot wounds, police said. Both were stabilized at Stroger Hospital.
A 49-year-old man with a concealed-carry license who witnessed the shooting pulled out his own gun and fired shots at Gonnigan, striking him in the arm and hip, police said.”
You’d be hard-pressed to find many stories about similar situations in mainstream media outlets like CNN.
But while CNN didn’t cover this story, they did find time to report on an Iowa man who was arrested for having a handgun and rifle in his hotel room while visiting Chicago. They painted the 32-year old man as a would-be mass shooter, despite the fact that his plans in Chicago were to propose to his fiance, which he was still thankfully able to do after being released from jail after paying his $10,000 bond.
The hero in this story had good reason to be armed.
In the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, crime is out of control. Violent crime is 364% higher than the national average, with citizens having a 1 in 17 chance of being the victim of a crime.
Gun control clearly isn’t working.
