The United States House Passes “Assault Weapons” Ban

July 29, 2022 proved to be a sad day for gun rights in America.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved an “assault weapons” prohibition by a vote of 217 to 213.

Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline sponsored this bill, H.R. 1808.

AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News noted that Democrats initially had plans of voting on an “assault weapons” ban on July 27. However, pulled the legislation at the time upon realizing that may not have had sufficient votes to greenlight the bill.

The Senate, which is split 50-50, will be a major obstacle towards the passage of this bill. Such legislation would likely be filibustered by the likes of Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who is a strong Second Amendment supporter and willing to filibuster anti-freedom legislation.

The legislation is not expected to pass the 50-50 Senate.

This legislation would ban at least 45 AR-style rifles. According to estimates from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), there are over 24 million AK and AR-style rifles in circulation. As Hawkins observed, these numbers show that “there are more AK and AR-style rifles in circulation ‘than Ford F-Series trucks on the road.’”

NSSF general counsel Larry Keane was critical of the passage of the assault weapons ban, especially the tactics Democrats employed to finalize the passage of this unconstitutional bill. He declared, “This legislation is as dangerous as it is revealing of the contempt for which the House Democrats hold for the Constitution and the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Keane continued, “Chairman Jerrold Nadler admitted during debate in his committee that he didn’t care the legislation was unconstitutional and defied Supreme Court precedent. Democratic representatives are not fulfilling the interest of ‘the People,’ instead representing special-interest gun control groups that seek to disarm law-abiding citizens and scapegoat them for crimes committed by others.”

While this bill will likely die in the Senate, we should never forget that Democrats are willing to pull all stops to move their legislation forward. They’re playing to win. Pro-Second Amendment activists need to put tremendous pressure on Republicans to make sure that they don’t even give this bill the time of day in the Senate.

Anti-freedom legislation should not be debated. Our sacred freedoms are non-negotiable.
