Chip Roy: More People Are Killed Every Year By Hands and Knives Than Rifles

Logic always flies out of the window following high-profile mass shootings. Emotions and fear-mongering run high, which makes it very difficult for people to get the truth on the most sensitive of public policy discussions.

However, several voices of reason have stepped up to the plate in the last week. Since he was first elected in 2018, Texas Congressman Chip Roy has been a staunch Second Amendment supporter.

Even now, when the push for civilian disarmament has been cranked up to the 11, Roy has remained a pillar for the defense of gun rights. During a debate on June 9, 2022 in the United States House, claimed that there are “more people killed in the United States by hands and knives than rifles.”

AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News, confirmed Roy’s assertion.

He cited a previous Breitbart piece published on September 27, 2022 where it showed stats from the FBI that indicated that fists and feet killed more people than rifles.

On September 27, 2021, Breitbart News reported on FBI numbers showing how more people were killed with fists and feet than with rifles. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR), 454 people were killed with rifles in 2020, while 657 were killed with “personnel weapons”, which are categorized as “hands, fists, feet, etc.”

In addition, Breitbart News alluded to FBI UCR figures demonstrating how over three and a half times as many people were stabbed to death in 2020 than were killed with all kinds of rifles put together.

According to the UCR, 454 individuals were shot and killed with rifles in 2020, whereas 1,732 were stabbed or hacked to death with “knives or cutting instruments.”

On June 9, Rep. Roy declared, “There are more people killed in the United States by hands and knives than rifles.”
Roy’s claim about hands and knives is true.

The Texas Congressman is correct about these figures. We have to remember that handguns are the primary weapons of choice for criminals and murders. They’re easy to conceal and very convenient to use during criminal activities.

Nevertheless, all forms of weapons are tools that could be used for good or evil acts. There are more good people than bad people out there. But when good people are disarmed or their rights are infringed upon, the criminals enjoy an asymmetric advantage. Even if these criminals don’t have access to firearms, they can still prey upon the weak through brute force or the use of blunt instruments.

Ultimately, the right to bear arms is the great equalizer for society’s weakest individuals.
